Vertical Axis Wind Turbines – Advantages & Disadvantages:

In this type of turbine the rotor shaft installed vertically and can therefore work even if the turbine is not directly pointed to the wind so that’s why they are called vertical axis wind turbine. It can produce power in low windy areas. There are different types of vertical axis wind turbines. With the growing popularity of these Turbines it is important to know about the advantages and disadvantages of vertical axis wind turbines.

Advantages – Vertical Axis Wind Turbines, have the generator and gearbox assembled near the ground instead of these parts being supported by a tower. That’s why it is easy to maintain. The vertical axis wind turbines also have parts which are easier to maintain, because they have a high airfoil pitch angle. In those area where wind turbine is prohibited then they also take advantage vertical axis wind turbine.

Disadvantages – Here are an also few disadvantages. Most of the turbines of this type produce 50% less energy from horizontal axis wind turbines. They can’t take the full advantage of high wind compare to horizontal wind turbines. They also need energy for spinning of blades.
